Ntoskrnl.exe BSOD crash
There are several factors that cause Ntoskrnl.exe BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) crashes. In the following post I’ll guide you through the necessary required steps in order to pinpoint the sources to this problem as well as resolving it.

What is Ntoskrnl.exe?
This executable file (kernel) is part of the Microsoft Windows NT OS family. In very simple words – it handles and manages various systems services, memory management as one example. As you can see, this file is critical and vital for Windows OS to work properly.

Problems and symptoms
Problems and errors associated with this file usually occur in the following situations:

(1) While playing games or other applications that consume a lot of graphic resources
(2) At random times for no special reason
(3) Immediately after computer startups/shutdowns

On those situations you usually experience an immediate Ntoskrnl.exe BSOD (STOP crash). The crash is usually accompanied with a description that includes one/few of the following error codes:

STOP 0x0000007F

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Typical causes to this crash:

(1) Existence of incorrect/old driver(s) – most common!
(2) Malware/spyware infection
(3) Conflicts between several programs
(4) Hardware problems

Step-by-step repair guide:

(1) Existence of incorrect/old driver(s)
One of your drivers, probably the graphic card driver, is either incorrect or too old. Using incorrect drivers is one of the most common causes to blue screen crashes.

The easiest way to detect problematic drivers is via the following drivers scanner– it automatically scans all your drivers (for free) and by the end of the scan it tells you which drivers need to be replaced.

Replace those drivers with new updated ones.
(Download them only from trusted sources!)

After replacing the drivers, restart your PC and see if the problem is solved.
If not…

(2) Malware/spyware infection
Verify that you’re PC isn’t infected.
I have no idea which anti-virus you’re using, I recommend using Microsoft’s free anti-virus called: Microsoft Security Essentials. It is reliable, easy to use, and it’s free…

If this hasn’t solved the problem yet then…

(3) Conflicts between several programs
Do you have by a mistake two different anti-virus programs installed on your PC…?
Conflicts between two anti-virus programs is another common source of trouble.

Leave only one anti-virus program installed.

(4) Ntoskrnl.exe BSOD due to Hardware problems
If nothing helped so far then there’s probably a hardware problem.
In most cases it is either a problem with your graphic card or with your ram memory.

(a) They are either not sitting properly in place
(b) Covered with a thick layer of dust that causes overheat
(c) Other problem that requires their replacement

Crash occurs while booting?
If Windows won’t upload and it crashes while the PC restarts, then upload Windows in “Safe Mode”. In most Windows platforms you need to push the F8 key while the PC is booting until you get an option on screen to select “Safe Mode”. Once Windows uploads, follow the above steps as described.
